Cooper Kenyon Burrows is one of the leading firms nationally in the areas of commercial fraud, tax and VAT investigations, money laundering and regulatory proceedings. The firm specialises in investigations and prosecutions by the Serious Fraud Office, the Fraud Investigation Group and HM Revenue and Customs and in regulatory cases brought by the DTI, FSA, OFT, HSE and the Environment and Asset Recovery Agencies. Michael Kenyon, Lesley Burrows and Ian Cooper have long been recognised throughout the country as established leaders in these areas of law. The firms very experienced team also includes partners Andrew Kenyon, Wendi Bussin and Lesley Griffiths, who bring further strength to the commercial fraud expertise in the practice. Claire Harvey has now joined the firm as a partner, having been Head of legal at United Kingdom Nirex Ltd, to broaden the Regulation and Compliance practice and offer an entirely new service in the growing field of Nuclear law.

Principal Areas of Work
Corporate and Commercial Fraud: Cooper Kenyon Burrows has one of the largest and longest established commercial fraud and tax controversy practices in the country with five partners practising full-time in this area assisted by 26 experienced fee earners. The firm became a member of the Serious Fraud Panel at its inception and the partners are accredited as supervisors of the most serious and complex cases. The firm is regarded as being amongst the leaders in the field with experience developed in many of the major prosecutions brought by the SFO and other agencies. Cooper Kenyon Burrows is at the forefront of cases involving stock market, accountancy, banking and international investment issues. This expertise and experience is carried over into the related areas of asset recovery law, CDDA proceedings, money laundering and extradition.

Regulation & Compliance: Cooper Kenyon Burrows advises and represents both companies and individuals in respect of investigations and proceedings brought by the many regulatory bodies that have proliferated in recent years such as the DTI, FSA, HSE and the Asset Recovery Agency and in professional disciplinary hearings. These proceedings are now often brought in the civil courts or before specialist tribunals. The firm has continued to broaden its expertise across this range of proceedings and now has significant strength in Environment law and in the provision of advice to all those involved in the Nuclear industry

HM Revenue & Customs: The firm is an acknowledged leading practice in this area and specialises in the protection of its clients' interests in the face of the exceptional powers of investigation possessed by HMRC. Often working with expert accountancy practices it has substantial experience in securing negotiated financial settlements with the Tax Authorities as an alternative to prosecution and regularly advises during 'Hansard' proceedings. Nevertheless, if a prosecution is commenced the practice is able to bring to bear its long experience of the trial process in the defence of its client's interests.
